Spotlight on Bonnie: Lighting the Way for Houston Girls✨

Sometimes, the universe nudges you in the right direction—sometimes, it nudges you three times. That’s exactly how Bonnie found her way to Girls on the Run Greater Houston. During the pandemic, she felt a deep need to make a meaningful impact in her community. A friend mentioned GOTR, then months later, she met Michelle at a community event, and soon after, her service club, Zonta Club of Houston, partnered with us. Three signs later, Bonnie knew: it was time to volunteer. “I signed up to be a coach that fall and haven’t looked back. It’s my favorite volunteer activity,” she shares.

Bonnie’s commitment goes beyond coaching—she’s also a dedicated donor. Growing up without strong matriarchs, she never had a clear roadmap for courage and resilience. “We can’t be what we can’t see,” Bonnie explains. “If we can see it, we can find the steps to become it. By supporting GOTR, I’m showing up for the next generation and healing the inner girl of my past.” Her dedication is a reminder that investing in girls today builds a stronger, brighter tomorrow.

What draws Bonnie most to GOTR? The mission itself. “GOTR supports girls holistically to realize their star power and potential,” she says. Having spent 17 years in the military, Bonnie appreciates how the program balances individuality with team cohesion—teaching girls that they can shine and lift others up at the same time.

And the stories? They’re unforgettable. Bonnie recalls one shy girl who, over a season and a half, blossomed into the team’s “class clown,” bringing joy and laughter to everyone. Another memory highlights two girls navigating conflict with empathy and honesty—skills learned in practice that will serve them far beyond the track. “It’s much easier to grow healthy trees in fertile soil than to heal a sick adult arbor,” Bonnie reflects.

For anyone considering supporting GOTR, Bonnie has a simple message: “If you want to help build a future where girls are empowered, courageous, and supported, this is the place to show up. Many hands make lighter work, and the more perspectives in the mix, the more beautiful the outcome.”

Looking ahead, Bonnie is excited about expanding GOTR’s reach in Houston, creating partnerships, and ensuring girls today—and tomorrow—see the impact of mentorship, community, and belief in their potential.

Bonnie’s light is bright, and she’s showing up for girls in every way she can. We’re so grateful she’s part of our village.
